When is the best time to buy a diamond engagement ring?

I’ve just started to learn about diamonds in preparation of buying a diamond engagement ring and am wondering when the best time is to buy a diamond engagement ring. I’ve got time to wait if it makes sense to do so, I want to get the most diamond for my modest budget of $3,600.00 with a focus on diamond cut quality and visual performance, then color, at least SI-1 in clarity, and around a half carat or larger in size. The setting that my girlfriend has fallen in love with is the Brian Gavin Engraved Cathedral in 18k Rose Gold, which leaves me about $2k for the diamond, and I’m open to the idea of blue fluorescence since blue is her favorite color and she’ll think that is really cool! Thanks! – Adam P.

Diamond Prices Tend to Go Up, Not Down:

Engraved Rose Gold Cathedral Diamond RingWhile I don’t have a crystal ball sitting on my desk which will enable me to see into the future and predict what diamond prices might do, I can tell you that from a historical perspective, diamond prices have consistently increased throughout the time I’ve been in the diamond business, and they’ve never really gone down. At the moment, the price of diamond rough (uncut diamond crystal) has increased several times over the past few weeks by 6 – 20%

And therefore I expect the price of polished diamonds to increase accordingly in the near future, which is why I’m going to suggest that you buy something like this 0.595 carat, I-color, VS-2 clarity, round diamond from the Brian Gavin Blue collection which exhibits medium blue fluorescence, before prices go up. Normally I wouldn’t suggest “buy now” but I think that it’s good advice when I’m well aware that the price of rough diamonds have already increased and believe that polished prices will increase soon as a result.

But to answer your question in a bit more detail, in my experience there generally is not a time of year which is a better or worse time to buy a diamond, they don’t increase and decrease in price based upon seasonal demand or anything like that.

One bit of insider information that I can provide you with, is that the diamond price guides and diamond price reports which are relied upon by the industry are published every Thursday night at midnight, thus if prices are going to increase it is likely to occur at that time, so be sure to buy your diamonds on Thursday afternoon if it is something which you are truly concerned about… I’m kind of kidding, but being serious at the same time, because this is the official diamond pricing schedule that the industry relies upon to remain current on a global scale.
