How to Order a Custom Cut Diamond from Brian Gavin?

An essential part of the diamond production process at Brian Gavin Diamonds, is the strategic planning that goes into the production of every single diamond that we manufacture. Each piece of diamond rough needs to be carefully evaluated to determine how to transform it from a dull looking pebble, into a stunning masterpiece worthy of the Brian Gavin Signature diamond brand. In doing so, we analyze the diamond rough using state-of-the-art computerized scanning technology, to determine the various possibilities which exist to maximize the yield of carat weight, in addition to mapping out the exact proportions required to maximize light return and visual performance.

The reality is that every diamond cutter faces the exact same challenges with every diamond they produce, each piece of diamond rough needs to be carefully evaluated, and the decision needs to be made as to whether to cut the diamond to maximize visual performance, carat weight, or somewhere in between. It was John Naisbitt who said “Strategic planning is worthless, unless there is first a strategic vision.”

And as a fifth generation diamond cutter, Brian Gavin’s vision is to produce diamonds which are awe inspiring and take our breath away… thus his focus is on the production of diamonds that exhibit levels of light performance which are measurably superior to the majority of diamonds produced, this is why we submit our diamonds to the American Gem Society Laboratory (AGSL) to be graded on their Platinum Light Performance grading platform, which uses Angular Spectrum Evaluation Technology (ASET) to measure diamonds for brightness, contrast, and other factors of visual performance.

While we make every effort to ensure that Brian Gavin Signature and Brian Gavin Blue (fluorescent) diamonds are available in a wide range of carat weight, colors, and clarities, the reality is that there is no way to possibly maintain an inventory of ideal cut diamonds which contains every combination of carat weight, color, and clarity imaginable; and thus there may be times when you want to arrange to have a diamond custom cut to by Brian Gavin.

What to expect when having a diamond custom cut:

One thing which few people take into consideration when they think about diamond cutting is the fact that the process involves placing an incredible amount of heat and pressure upon a crystal, which often contains a wide range of impurities, which are commonly referred to as inclusions.

Part of the planning process is to locate and identify the inclusions within the diamond, evaluate the crystal structure of the diamond, and determine how to cut the diamond for maximum yield and visual performance… unfortunately this does not always ensure that we’re going to be able to produce something like a 2.20 carat, D-color, VS-1 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature round diamond with a specific total depth, table diameter, crown angle, pavilion angle, and girdle thickness; and you might be better off to buy something like this 2.018 carat, E-color, VS-1 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature round diamond which is already complete, because the reality is that very few people would be able to discern the difference between a D-color and E-color diamond outside of a gemological laboratory in the first place, and the difference in carat weight will not be readily visible without close scrutiny.

The reality of diamond cutting, is that it is a lot like peeling an onion, in that the final clarity and color grade of the diamond can change with every rotation of the polishing wheel, and it is impossible to know the exact proportions of the diamond until it is complete… because the ultimate goal is to create a diamond which exhibits the highest levels of light return and sparkle, not necessarily a specific offset for the crown and pavilion angles.

On the same note, while Brian Gavin is world renown for the production quality of his hearts and arrows diamonds, the reality is that there is no such thing as perfect, with something which is handcrafted, facet-by-facet, turn-by-turn on the diamond cutting wheel, there are simply degrees of perfection and obviously we strive to produce the best diamond possible from every piece of diamond rough that we are given the opportunity to sculpt into something incredible.

This video created by Brian Gavin provides a glimpse into the red hot world of diamond cutting, and the planning that goes into every Brian Gavin Signature diamond produced, and demonstrates the process which we rely on when custom cutting diamonds for customers who can’t find exactly what they are looking for within our extensive inventory of Brian Gavin Signature diamonds.

If you are unable to find a suitable option within our existing inventory of diamonds, we will be happy to discuss the option of custom cutting a diamond to your relative specifications for carat weight, color, and clarity, with the understanding that the overall diamond cut quality will be within the specifications established by Brian Gavin, but that we cannot guarantee a specific outcome in terms of carat weight, color, clarity, and exact proportions, merely within that range… note that a non-refundable deposit is required for all custom diamond cutting projects, and that no guarantee is provided for the re-cutting of any polished diamonds which are submitted to Brian Gavin to be fine tuned or re-cut, due to the unpredictable nature of diamond crystal, and the fact that we are essentially remodeling somebody else’s work which was imperfect to begin with.
