Is it good to get your wedding ring appraised?

“It’s been a few years since my husband bought my diamond wedding set from you, and I’m wondering whether it is good to get my wedding ring appraised periodically, or whether the appraisal that we obtained upon receipt of the ring is adequate because we’re in the process of changing insurance companies and the new agent suggested a review of our jewelry and other valuables. I also wanted to share how pleased I still am with my diamond, hardly a day passes without somebody noticing how beautiful and sparkly it is… thank you!”

How often should jewelry be appraised?

Generally speaking, jewelry items such as diamond engagement rings, diamond pendants, diamond earrings, and other fine jewelry items of substantial value, should be appraised every two years to ensure proper valuation, and that the jewelry remains in good condition.

The current value of your wedding ring will be based upon the characteristics of the diamond and the setting, so be sure to bring a copy of the diamond grading report, and your original sales receipt because it will provide the Gemologist with a more accurate assessment of carat weight, than they can determine by formula since the stone is mounted.

Be aware that even though you are providing the Gemologist with the carat weight of the diamond, that they will probably still measure the diamond and then run a simple calculation to estimate the carat weight of the mounted diamond by formula; this is to ensure that the diamond being appraised matches the diamond described on the diamond grading report.

How do Gemologists verify mounted diamonds?

In addition to measuring the diamond and verifying the carat weight by formula, the Gemologist will locate and identify the inclusions within the diamond and compare them to the inclusions indicated on the plotting diagram of the diamond grading report to ensure that they match.

The Gemologist should also estimate the color grade of the diamond and determine whether the diamond exhibits fluorescence, and if so, to what degree; this will give you an opportunity to see the strong blue fluorescence in your I-color Brian Gavin Blue diamond under black light, it’s going to glow a beautiful neon blue color that I think is quite pretty!
