What Is a Pear-Shaped Diamond?

A pear-shaped diamond (or pear-cut diamond) is a teardrop-shaped fancy diamond, with one rounded end and one pointed tip.

These stones share a similar style to brilliant diamonds, giving them distinctive sparkle. But the modified, elongated silhouette flatters the hand and adds a feminine touch.

Around 8% of couples in the U.S. choose pear-shaped engagement rings, making them a unique yet suitable statement choice.

  • 58 facets, with tiny culet facets at the point.

  • Usually 4 to 8 pavilions.

Because of their popularity, pear-shaped diamonds can cost anywhere from $500 to over $1,000,000, depending on the 4 Cs.

Pear vs. Teardrop vs. Marquise

Pear, teardrop, and marquise diamonds are elongated diamond shapes.

Pear and teardrop are the same, with the same cut and silhouette. But ‘Pear’ is the official name used by certificates and throughout the industry.

Marquise diamonds are different. They feature points at both ends, creating a long and dramatic profile.

The Ideal Length-to-Width Ratio

Experts say the ideal length-to-width ratio is around 1.50 to 1.75:1. In this range, you’ll get an elegant, elongated pear shape without going too narrow.

However, personal preference should come first, and if you prefer a slimmer, longer look, you can go for 1.75:1 or above.

How to Choose a Pear Diamond: The Bow-Tie Effect

The number one concern when buying a pear-cut engagement ring is the ‘bow-tie effect’.

The bow-tie effect is a dark contrast pattern of light that runs across the width of the stone. It can look like a continuous dark bar, or a bow tie.

It’s caused by the stone's elongated shape, which lets facets reflect the viewer’s shadow instead of light evenly.

Although not an official grading detail, the bow-tie effect can make a big difference in how a pear diamond looks. Ideally, you’ll want a minimal bow-tie effect, achieved with a well-cut pear shape.

You can assess a bow-tie effect by:

  • Viewing the stone face-up under natural lighting

  • Looking across the stone's table.

  • Tilting and rotating the stone to see if a dark zone stays in the same place.

  • Comparing it side by side with other pear diamond engagement rings.

How Brian Gavin Minimizes the Bow-Tie

While it is almost impossible to estimate the light performance of a fancy-shape diamond, Brian Gavin follows proportionality guidelines, exacting standards, and proprietary cut precision to minimize any bow-tie effect.

We focus on diamonds with a 1.50:1.00 or 1.75:1.00 length-to-width ratio, and limit the total depth to 59-63% and the table diameter to 55-61.5%. However, each diamond is different, so there's some wiggle room.

By carefully controlling pavilion angles, facet alignment, depth, table size, and crown geometry, we can distribute light more evenly across the stone's center.

For example, this 1.01-carat pear-shaped diamond shows how our selection standards translate into visible light performance. In its ASET image, this diamond is eye-clean under normal viewing conditions with minimal bow-tie effect.

Symmetry, Color & Clarity for Pears

As with any diamond, consider the 4 Cs.

Symmetry

Symmetry is the most important factor for pear-cut diamonds because the shape has one line of symmetry, so any flaws there will really stand out.

We recommend drawing an imaginary line down the stone's length. You want both sides of that line to look mirrored. In practice, though, perfect symmetry is nearly impossible in fancy stones.

Color

Pear shapes tend to show color more noticeably at the tip. We recommend considering a higher color grade than you might for other diamonds, as poor coloration will concentrate noticeably at the tip.

Clarity

Clarity grade reflects the number and size of inclusions (or ‘defects’) internally, under 10x magnification.

For a pear-shaped engagement ring, you’ll want to truly wow your partner, so make sure you get an eye-clean grade. Unless your partner will be using a microscope, that level of clarity is more than enough.

Pear Shaped Engagement Rings & Settings

Pear-cut engagement rings work well in settings that protect and highlight the tip while emphasizing the elongated profile. Here’s a look at recommended settings:

Solitaire, Halo & Hidden-Halo Pear Rings

Solitaires are ideal for that classic engagement ring look, while halos create a more visible presence around the pear.

In recent years, the hidden halo has also risen in popularity, adding sparkle beneath the center stone without disguising the elongated outline face-up.

Setting

How it works

Best for

Solitaire

The single center diamond is held by prongs to keep the outline visible.

A classic, secure pear-shaped solitaire look.

V-prong solitaire

A V-shaped prong wraps around the pointed tip.

Gives maximum tip protection with minimal metal coverage.

Six-prong solitaire

Six prongs support the stone for extra security.

A classic, secure pear-shaped solitaire look.

Bezel

A metal rim surrounds the diamond’s edge for protection.

Active lifestyles and everyday wear.

Partial bezel

Metal protects the edges or point while leaving most of the stone exposed.

Significant protection with more openness than a full bezel.

Halo

Small accent diamonds surround the center stone, in a ‘halo’ style.

A larger-looking center diamond and enhanced sparkle.

Pavé band

Small diamonds set along the band

Added brilliance without distracting from the center stone.

Three-stone

Side diamonds that flank the pear center

A more substantial, romantic design.

Which Way Should a Pear Ring Point? (How to Wear It)

A pear-shaped diamond ring can point any direction you want. There are no rules; it comes down to personal style and comfort, but here is a look at how the direction can affect the illusion:

  • Pointing up (toward the finger):

    • Gives a traditional classic look that slims the finger.

    • Gives the illusion of a teardrop.

  • Pointing down (toward the wrist or heart):

    • Gives a softer, more romantic, and modern look.

    • Reduces snagging on clothing.

  • Sideways:

    • Sits horizontally, offering a bold and unique look.

Finally, if you live a very hands-on lifestyle, we recommend protecting the tip, as it's prone to chipping. You can do this with a protective setting, such as a bezel.

Pear Diamonds by Carat

Pear-shaped diamonds vary considerably in face-up size even with the same carat weight because length, width, depth, and proportions vary from stone to stone.  For that reason, use carat and millimeter dimensions together to understand better how big it will look.

Popular Pear Carat Weights (1–4 Carat)

1-4 carat pear-shaped diamond rings are the most popular; here’s a look at how weight generally affects the look of a ring:

  • 0.25 to 0.50 ct: Gives a delicate, understated look, especially in a simple solitaire setting.

0.75 to 1.00 ct: Perfect for a balanced, classic pear-cut engagement ring.

  • 1.50 to 2.00 ct: Tends to give a more obvious elongation, as the extra carat weight becomes noticeable in the overall spread.

2.50 to 3.00 ct+: Around this size, you’re making a statement. Make sure the setting protects the tip and that the diamond’s proportions stay well-balanced, not overly narrow.

Pear-Shaped Diamond Jewelry

Pear-shaped diamonds are also a lovely, natural choice for jewelry, such as:

Earrings, Necklaces & Wedding Bands

Because of their shape, pear-shaped diamonds are an elegant choice for drop pear diamond earrings, as they elongate the ear. They’re often used as single drops, paired drops, or accents alongside rounds and baguettes.

Repeating pears can also create a refined, linear-looking necklace, pairing well with large stones of other shapes.

Customers also choose pear-shaped diamonds for their wedding bands, especially those after a more distinctive aesthetic.
