Trending now: yellow diamonds
Since 2004, the demand for colored diamonds has increased significantly due to consumers' demand for the yellow gems and as a result of white diamond prices increasing by more than 30 percent, according to Nadya Masidlover of the Wall Street Journal. The economy, paired with the celeb sensation surrounding the rare breed of diamonds, has contributed to an invested interest in the jewelry among the general public.
Colored stones vs. white diamonds
Yellow diamonds are a rarity compared to their white counterparts, which is why many celebrities began sporting the trend. The composition of a yellow diamond is caused by a reduction in carbon atoms and an increase in nitrogen throughout the structure of the stone. The more nitrogen present, the deeper the color of the diamond.
Back in 2011, JCK Online began to compile a list of the top 20 articles published that year - among the most popular was an article about yellow diamonds - to further understand the uptick in consumer interest and demand, JCK asked their clients to give a statement regarding why they thought the colored diamond trend was one of the most researched topics.
Celebrity obsessed
According to Mike Derby of Focus Business Management Institute, the fascination with yellow diamonds stems from the fact that popular celebrities have been spotted wearing these particular stones on the red carpet and at award ceremonies. Derby went on to say that this new obsession with yellow diamonds is not unlike the craze that surrounded Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring, which now rests on the fingers of Duchess Catherine.
Famous celebrities who rock the yellow diamond trend include:
Rebecca Romijn - The actress received a six carat yellow diamond engagement ring from husband Jerry O'Connell. The actress had her ring re-purposed after she got pregnant to create a dangling diamond design.
Carrie Underwood - The famous country singer and winner of American Idol received a halo engagement ring from hockey player Mike Fisher. The yellow diamond center stone is surrounded by white diamonds - Underwood had a white diamond band made to match her setting.
Kelly Clarkson - This songstress is the most recent celebrity to debut a yellow diamond rock. The original American Idol winner's engagement ring features a pave cut yellow center stone surrounded smaller white diamonds along the main stone and along the band.
These ladies aren't the first to rock the yellow diamond. According to the Wall Street Journal, Marilyn Monroe wore colored stones more than 50 years ago, but this fact has gone roughly unnoticed given that the general public is more obsessed with celebrity lifestyles today than they were back in the 50s and 60s.
