Square and rectangle diamond-cut shapes
Much of the appeal of a diamond comes from the way in which it was cut. There are many types of popular shapes, and some companies create their own signature looks. The round cut is perhaps the most widely used diamond cut, though there are others that are just as stunning. Here's a look at rectangular diamonds:
Princess
The princess cut is mixed, meaning that it uses features from multiple shapes to give it a unique look. It is essentially square and has pointed corners. After the round diamond, a princess cut is the most popular among brides. It's no surprise as the angles created in the gem cause it to sparkle in a unique and brilliant way. The Rachel engagement ring from the Brian Gavin team features this prized cut.
Cushion
The cushion cut is similar to the princess except that the edges are rounded. It can be perfectly square or more of a rectangle. Different cutters create different facets in the gem, so a cushion diamond covers a lot of looks. The Brian Gavin cushion cut diamond combines the classic "Old Miner Cut" and an oval shape. You can see clearly defined patterns when looking down into the table of the gem. The cushion has become increasingly sought-after in recent years as brides look for something modern yet timeless.
Emerald
Gems with an emerald cut are rectangular and have a long pavilion. The top of the gem is open so that you can look down into the stone. The inside appears to hold a series of concentric rectangles. The step look of this cut is used to emphasis the clarity of the diamond. Check out the Emerald and Baguette engagement ring for an example of the visual effect of this cut.
Asscher
The asscher cut is similar to the emerald accept that it is traditionally square. The corners are cut just like its rectangular counterpart. Though this look has been around for a while (developed in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers of Holland), it became popular in Hollywood after it was featured in an episode of "Sex and the City."
Radiant
Designed for maximum brilliance, the radiant diamond is cut in the shape of a square. It has unique faceting patterns that reflect light in an uncountable number of directions. The light appears to push outward from the heart of the gem if you look at it from the top. Radiant diamond cut shapes are popular with those who like the brilliance of a round gem and the square of an emerald.
