How to wear a Wedding Band and Engagment Ring together

Marriage 101: How to wear a wedding band and engagement ring

“First things first, I just have to say how much I love my diamond engagement ring from Brian Gavin! People comment on it all the time, I receive so many compliments on how beautiful it looks. The sparkle is absolutely amazing! All of my friends are jealous, it’s perfect. Our wedding day is fast approaching, and I’m trying to figure out how to wear a wedding band and engagement ring together. I tried to look to my friends hands for answers, but I’ve discovered that different people wear their rings in different configurations. What do you recommend? Are the ring designed to look better worn a certain way?”

How to wear a wedding set:

Traditionally, in the United States, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand. Legend has it that the ancient Egyptians and Romans (pick one) believed that this finger shared a vein with the heart. Thus, wearing a symbol of love on that finger, signified your everlasting love and devotion. As romantic as this notion appears, my understanding is that it’s not anatomically accurate.

Nevertheless, most our clients wear their engagement rings on their left ring finger. This is the ring finger that you’ll see guys slipping a ring on in most movie portrayals of the proposal. Thus, it’s most likely that you’ll want to wear your engagement ring on your left hand.

With this in mind, we also find that most of our clients wear their wedding bands on the same finger. The order in which you wear your rings is definitely a matter of personal preference.

On which hand and finger are wedding rings worn?

One of the more popular approaches is to wear your wedding rings in the order you received them. This means that you would wear the engagement ring closest to your heart, and the wedding band on the outside nearest your fingertips.

This of course, opens the door to the argument that the wedding band should be worn closest to the heart. Since it signifies your ultimate decision to spend the rest of your lives together, it is the symbol of your bond.

In the latter approach, you will probably want to wear your engagement ring on your hand on the day of your wedding, and then simply transfer the ring to your left hand after he places the wedding ring on your hand.

Ultimately it is a matter of personal preference:

Regardless of how some people think you should wear your wedding set, the reality is that you should wear it however you think looks best. Some wedding sets look better when worn one way or the other. Naturally, perspective and personal preference weigh into the equation, so you have to decide which way looks best to you.

You might decide to go with the more traditional approach on your wedding day, wear your engagement ring on your right hand, so that he can slip your wedding ring on your left hand, and then slide your engagement ring over during or after the ceremony.

And then you might decide after wearing them that way for awhile, that you want to try flipping them around, so that the engagement ring is closest to your heart. If nothing else, this might be a fun way to discover whether he’s paying attention. LOL. He’s probably not, not to that anyway.
