Kanye proposes with cushion-cut diamond ring
Recording artist Kanye West proposed to Kim Kardashian on Oct. 21 with all the glam a celebrity could muster. Love them or not, "Kimye" have set the world abuzz with their recent engagement and jaw-dropping jewelry choice.
How it happened
The couple was at AT&T Park in San Francisco with friends and family when the giant screen on the field displayed the words "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!" The Grammy winner had a little back-up from a 50-piece orchestra - which played songs by Lana Del Rey and a compilation piece by Keri Hilson, Ne-Yo and Kanye West himself - when he got down on one knee. Kim said yes and is now sporting a gorgeous ring.
The ring
Featuring a flawless type 2A, 15-carat diamond, the custom engagement ring is a stunning testament to Kanye's love. Type 2 diamonds have no nitrogen impurities and are generally harder and larger than type 1. The A refers to the area where the diamond originated. These stones were originally found in India and are prized for their color. White diamonds often appear more colorless than other types of gems with the same grade. A D-grade is the most colorless a diamond can be. As it is also type 2A, Kim's jewel is considered flawless.
The cushion-cut diamond has gotten a lot of media attention, as the ring is estimated to be worth between $4 to $5 million. Cushion-cut diamonds are either square or rectangular with rounded corners. Prized for its timeless look, this diamond cut has been sported by other celebrities, including Jennifer Garner, Ashley Tisdale and Miley Cyrus.
Ring number 1
Kim's first marriage ended after only 72 days. The ring she got from Kris Humphries had a 16.21-carat center stone, which was flanked by two 1.8-carat diamonds. It had reportedly cost $2 million, though it only sold at auction for $620,000. The ring was only estimated to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000, so sales exceeded expectations.
