Guide for an eco-friendly wedding

Guide for an eco-friendly wedding

A wedding day is so special that some brides begin planning the momentous occasion way before their husband-to-be pops the question with a diamond cut engagement ring. As green living is more popular than ever, it should come as no surprise that people are planning their special day with the environment in mind. If you want to have an eco-friendly soiree, follow this guide to reduce your carbon footprint while still having a beautiful event:

Conflict-free diamonds

Conflict-free diamonds are a must have for any eco-friendly couple. This means the diamonds were mined and shipped in a humane way. According to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, jewelers must meet specific requirements and guidelines to ensure diamonds are not purchased through rebel movements. Brian Gavin diamonds are certified with the process, so you can be sure your sparkling ring was purchased in an eco-friendly way.

Local food

Your food choices are important to make sure that you are having an environmentally friendly wedding. Begin by finding a distributor who sources local and organic fruits, veggies and meat. You may also find a venue that uses sustainable practices in its catering department. Some of these places will do recycling and donate extra food to local homeless shelters or charities. Make sure to ask about this. Try to focus on a menu with seasonal items. Pair your wedding cake with local fruits as well.

Minimal paper

Wedding invitations can be stunningly elaborate, but they don't have to include five sheets of paper with dividers to be gorgeous. Consider a simple invitation with the minimal about of paper used: One sheet for the invite, one smaller piece for the RSVP and one for directions and other information.

Ditch the wrapping paper

Have you ever been to an event where the host asks for the gifts to come unwrapped? While it might seem strange, this is great way to cut down on the amount of paper your guests have to use. You may want to add this request to your invitations to the wedding shower as well.

Shuttle service

Consider having your wedding ceremony and reception at the same location to cut down the amount of money your guests need to spend on gas. Better yet, have it at a hotel where everyone can spend the night. However, if your guests will need to drive either to the wedding or from the ceremony to the reception, opt for a shuttle service that offers large groups a ride instead of having everyone drive separately.
