Fancy Vivid Orange Diamond Sets World Auction Record!

Rapaport Diamond News reports that Christie’s auction house of Geneva has sold an extremely rare orange diamond weighing 14.82 carats, which is VS-1 in clarity, and fancy vivid orange in color. The pear shape diamond sold for $2,398,151.00 per carat, for a total of $35,540,611.00 which is more than twice the presale estimate $17,414,966 for the orange diamond.

“The Orange” diamond is the largest fancy vivid orange diamond ever to have been graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and broke two world auction records: (1) it fetched the highest price per carat price for any colored diamond that has ever been sold at auction; and (2) it set the world record for the highest price paid for a fancy vivid orange diamond. The diamond was reportedly purchased by a private collector who wishes to remain anonymous.

What causes the color in fancy colored diamonds?

Fancy color diamonds, such as the fancy vivid orange diamond recently sold by Christie’s auction house, and the two fancy intense orange colored diamonds from Brian Gavin which are described above, get their color from chemical impurities and/or imperfections in crystal lattice structure of the diamond. While white or colorless diamonds are discounted when there is a presence of yellow, yellowish-brown, or grey, fancy colored diamonds are considered to be more valuable because they exhibit colors other than white.

The more intense the fancy color of the diamond, the more valuable and rare the diamond is considered to be… lighter shades of color cost less, but the rarity of the base color is also taken into account when pricing the diamond. For instance, a pale fancy blue colored diamond will tend to cost considerably more than a fancy vivid intense yellow diamond of the same carat weight and clarity, simply because blue is a rarer color of diamond.

Whatever color strikes your fancy, Brian Gavin Diamonds offers a broad variety of fancy colored diamonds, and an extensive catalogue of engagement rings to set them in.
