What is the best clarity and color for diamond earrings?

One of the most frequently asked questions that we receive from people who are shopping for diamond earrings are “what is the best clarity and color for diamond earrings?”

The answer of course depends on your personal preference in terms of whether you are able to accept being able to locate an inclusion or two with just your eyes, upon close scrutiny of the diamonds, or whether you prefer that the diamond be completely eye clean; and how sensitive happen to be to subtle differences in the tone or color of the diamond.

A good middle ground for diamond earrings is provided by the SI-1 clarity grade, and the G-H color range, this will usually ensure that the inclusions within the diamond will not be easily detected without magnification, and the diamonds will face up bright and white; however this combination of diamond color and clarity will also bring the price up a bit.

How To Select Diamonds For Brian Gavin Crossed Trellis 3 Stone RingSince the diamonds are going to be worn up in your ears, and they will be subjected to less scrutiny than diamonds which are worn on the hand, a lot of people prefer to go with a slightly lower clarity grade, such as the SI-2 clarity grade, which may contain some inclusions that are visible without magnification upon close scrutiny of the diamond; and some people may prefer to choose diamonds which are slightly warmer in color and tone, such as those in the I-J-K-L color range, because it is much more difficult to judge the body color of diamonds when they are worn as earrings.

However we also have a lot of clients who want the clarity of the diamonds to be higher, such as up in the VS-2 + clarity range, so that they never have to worry about seeing an inclusion; and they quite often prefer diamonds of higher color, such as those in the D-E-F color range, so that the diamonds are as white and bright as they can possibly be.

One important factor to consider, is if you might want to move the diamonds out of your ears at some point, and set them into a three stone ring, such as this 18k white gold, three stone, crossed trellis setting from Brian Gavin, because then you might want to select diamonds which are the same clarity and color grade as your center stone, so that they are a good match when placed side-by-side. Of course, you don’t need to worry about this too much, because you can always take advantage of our generous trade-in and upgrade policy, and trade the diamonds in at a later date if you decide that you want to make a 3 stone ring, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
