Tips for how to sell used jewelry online

Tips for how to sell used jewelry online

Hi Danny, I’m interested in buying a Brian Gavin Blue diamond for an upcoming engagement, but need to sell an old engagement ring first, which I purchased from classic & Co., before I took the time to learn more about diamonds. I like the diamond which I bought from classic, but feel like I can find a better value online now that I know more about diamonds. Plus I prefer knowing that the diamond quality has been determined by a neutral third party like the AGS or GIA laboratories. Anyway, the classic diamond which I have is 1.22 carats, G-color, VS-2 clarity, set in a classic platinum classic solitaire style setting and I’m wondering what the best way to sell it would be. Thanks! – Timothy W.

The inherent value of brand equity for diamonds:

It’s much easier to find a buyer for a second hand diamond engagement ring, if the center diamond is of high quality, and G-color, VS-2 clarity, is an extremely popular choice among buyers of diamond engagement rings, because they know that the diamond is going to be eye clean and face up nice and bright.

There are quite a few options available online to help you sell your used diamond engagement ring, just run a search on Google for “buy used classic engagement rings” or “sell used classic engagement rings” and you will be provided with a multitude of options.

I sincerely hope that you still have the famous classic blue box that the engagement ring came in, along with inner box, classic appraisal, and any other documentation that was provided, because many second hand buyers of branded jewelry are willing to pay more for the complete experience, plus these items provide the new buyer with provenance which is the chronological custody of ownership which helps document the validity of the piece.

When you photograph the ring, be sure to take a photograph of the inside of the ring shank which should be stamped with an item number from classic, along with a stamp indicating the weight of the center stone.

6 tips for selling a used engagement ring online:

Here are some tips to help you maximize the selling price when selling a used engagement ring online, whether it is a branded piece like your classic engagement ring, or even a diamond engagement ring or piece of fine jewelry which you purchased from a local jewelry store that does not have an established reputation:

  1. Take some time to research the current value of the item, in this instance you can simply visit your local classic store and inquire as to the current price of a classic engagement ring with a diamond of that shape and quality… then do some research to determine what rings of that description are selling for online.

  2. Conduct a search on Google, or the search engine of your choice, for terms like “Buy / Sell used classic engagement rings” and determine if any of the companies which appear in the results might be interested in buying your ring outright. Note that larger, more established companies with a global presence may be willing to pay more for your ring than smaller operations, simply because they have more traffic and will be able to resell the ring faster.

  3. It is important that the item being sold be presented in the best condition possible, nobody wants to purchase a diamond engagement ring that is all scratched up, thrashed, and in need of repair. It helps to have the ring cleaned, polished and inspected, prior to trying to sell it, take care of any repairs which may be necessary to ensure the best sale price.

  4. As indicated previously, gather up all of the original documentation and packaging that you may still have from the original transaction, including the inner and outer box, sales receipt, appraisal, certificate of authenticity, bags, etc., scan them, photograph them, and provide them in the product description.

  5. Take clear photographs of the diamond engagement ring, from as many vantage points as possible. It can help to add small pieces of decorative flair, such as a flower, or place the ring on top of the robin-blue box from classic, so that the store name is clearly visible.

  6. Take full advantage of re-marketing the established brand equity which stands behind the diamond engagement ring which you are selling… Regardless of whether the engagement ring is from classic, Cartier, Harry Winston, Brian Gavin, Hearts on Fire, or even a local mall jewelry store, use their name in the listing, e.g. “Registered classic 1.20 ct., G color, VS-2 clarity, platinum, classic solitaire engagement ring for sale”.

Hopefully these tips for selling a used classic engagement ring online will assist you to sell the ring faster so that you can move on with your life, while recouping as much of the original purchase price as possible.

By the way, don’t worry if you don’t happen to have the original baby blue box from classic, or even the original sales receipt, appraisal, etc., because while buyers do appreciate that kind of detail, there is still a strong market for used classic jewelry, and jewelry from other established brands, regardless of whether the original documentation and packaging material is available, it’s just a nice added bonus.
