Should more money be spent on the diamond or the engagement ring?

Should more money be spent on the diamond or the engagement ring?

I’m shopping for an engagement ring and need your insight Danny, to settle a difference of opinion which my girlfriend and I have about the ratio of money which is spent on the diamond and the engagement ring. My budget for the entire diamond engagement ring is $9,500.00 and I’d really prefer it to be under $9k, and I really like the look of this 1.022 carat, H-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Blue diamond set in the Bead Set cathedral but my girlfriend really wants a Halo style engagement ring and says we can buy a smaller diamond because the halo will add sparkle to the outside of the diamond and make it look bigger? What to do if the engagement ring she wants is too expensive?

All right, I don’t usually give out relationship advice, because it only leads to trouble, but it seems to me that if your girlfriend is willing to accept a smaller size diamond, in order to get the halo setting that she wants, it makes sense to accept the settlement offer… it is after all, her engagement ring and she’s the one who is going to be wearing it. Now if on the other hand, you think this is simply a ploy to get you to buy the halo setting and the larger diamond, well…

Then my friend, you’ve got yourself quite the dilemma! Let’s see if I can’t provide you with some options that will enable you to make a more informed decision.

How much does a diamond halo add to diamond diameter?

One option that you might want to consider, is this 0.907 carat, G-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature round diamond, which is selling for $6,929.00 and has an average outside diameter of 6.23 mm, which when set in the halo setting will provide almost 8.5 mm of beautiful sparkle on your girlfriend’s finger! The completed ring would run you about $10,189.00 and you could save a little bit more money if you take advantage of the discount which we offer for payment via cash / wire transfer. This particular halo setting contains accent diamonds which measure average 1.8 mm in diameter, and then the edge of the ring needs to be accounted for, so if we take the average outside diameter of 6.46 millimeters for the 1.022 carat, H-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Blue diamond into account, the approximate outside diameter of the finished ring is going to be around 10 mm, which is a pretty good size ring that is going to exhibit exceptional sparkle that will be seen from across the room! The accent diamonds set in the ring are cut to the same standards as larger Brian Gavin Signature diamonds, and they are F-G in color and VS clarity.

However I think the option that I personally would select, given your preference that the center diamond weigh at least one carat, and the budget constraints which we all have to work within to some degree, is this 1.078 carat, I-color, SI-1 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature round diamond, because at $6,850.00 it’s only about $600 above your desired price range set in the halo setting, and it’s going to make both of you extremely happy for many years to come!
