Mixing jewelry trends

Mixing jewelry trends

Every season, new trends hit the fashion and jewelry markets. Sometimes these fads are just that and last only the duration of a few months. Other times, the latest look in jewelry extends for years. If you like to put your best fashion foot forward, you may be so bold as to mix current trends. However, you don't have to be a certified fashionista to make the most of what's in.

The looks

There have been several trends hitting the market throughout 2013, and more than a few have lasted the entire year. Some of the more popular looks include mixing metals and stacking similar pieces. Fortunately, these two lend themselves to each other, making it simple to incorporate both into your wardrobe.

Mixed metals: For years, wearing silver and gold together was considered taboo. Now, however, the sky's the limit for metal combinations. Silver, yellow, white and rose gold, and platinum are all options. You can create custom jewelry designs that include multiple metals, or you can do some digging to mix existing pieces.

However you choose to do it, find a common denominator. The metal is your variable - so find a control. For example, two bracelets that are the same size and shape and display a matching design can be worn in two different tones. For a custom design, try creating jewelry that has both tones in one piece. You should have no trouble drawing inspiration from the many trendy ideas circulating.

Stacking jewelry

Bracelets, necklaces and even rings are being loaded on in droves. You can wear this trend too by finding pieces that work well together. The trick is to find a common thread that pulls the individual jewelry together. You can wear thin chain necklaces that vary in length. The similar quality is the thickness and style of chain. Start with an opera-length piece, then stack on several shorter pieces. This adds weight and volume without being incongruous.

Combining trends

Two-tone metal pieces and stacking jewelry go hand in hand. In fact, stacking opens doors when it comes to mixing metals. For example, you can purchase multiple necklaces in different metals and then wear them together. Diamonds by the Yard is the perfect pendant for this trend. Choose one in platinum and the other in rose gold to add variation to your look. Pair that with diamond stud earrings to complete the outfit. A round diamond cut stud is the best choice, as the Diamonds by the Yard necklaces also have a round cut stone.
