Mixed Metal Engagement Rings - Popular Trends
One of the most popular trends in engagement rings for 2015 has been mixing metal types to create contrast that makes rings more striking! This is a simple concept that can have dramatic effects upon the appearance of a ring, and it is easier to implement than you might imagine. Simply ask our customer service division whether the ring style that you are considering is available with ring shanks of a different color, or whether our custom jewelry division can custom make a version of the ring in two-tone. Of course, the design of the ring could just as easily be reversed, so that the diamonds are set in 18k yellow gold bezels, with a platinum ring shank. Or you could order the ring in 18k rose gold if you prefer. Note that the effect of setting diamonds in different metal types is that it tends to affect the color grade of the diamond by about one perceptible color grade. Setting diamonds in white gold or platinum tends to make them face-up about one color grade higher, and setting them in yellow gold or rose gold tends to make them face-up about one color grade warmer.
Understand that I’m referring to the color of the metal that is actually touching the diamond, the setting portion of the ring, not the color of the ring shank which wraps around the finger. Thus if you want a ring that is made of rose gold or yellow gold, but want the diamond to face-up as white as possible, it is recommended that the setting portion of the ring be white gold or platinum. But if you prefer diamonds that are warmer in color, then set them in rose gold or yellow gold, which will accentuate the warmer hues of the diamond. Another way to create dramatic contrast in an engagement ring is to use diamonds of different color grades, such as a center stone that is colorless D-E-F color, and accent diamonds that are warmer in color, such as L-M-N faint yellow, or warmer.
