How to design a custom diamond engagement ring

“I ran across this hand drawn sketch of a ring design posted by Brian Gavin on Pinterest, and was wondering how a person goes about designing a custom diamond engagement ring? I’m interested in designing my own custom ring, but have no idea as to how to start, there are just too many ring styles that I like, and when I try to picture my ring based upon the combined concepts, it just seems like a jumbled mess, pieced together from different ring designs that I like. What is the best way to design a custom diamond engagement ring? The other challenge is that I’m not an artist, I don’t think that I can provide you with a good sketch of the ring I want.”

You don’t have to be an artist, or even submit a sketch to us that shows what you want, you can simply provide us with pictures of different rings that you like and tell us what you like and what you don’t like about each design.

Our custom jewelry design department will help you figure out which design features compliment each other, and which will work well together in a ring, and then we can work up a Computer Aided Design (CAD) of the ring so that you can see the prototype from several different vantage points.

For instance, let’s say that you like the concept of the five stone trellis setting featured in the sketch provided above, but you think that five stones might be a bit too large on your finger, but that you might like some smaller accent diamonds set down the band of the ring, and you feel that you don’t really need the small accent diamond that is set in the base of the prongs as pictured on the side of the ring… our design department might suggest something like the three stone trellis setting from Brian Gavin which is pictured to the left and save you the cost of custom designing a ring…

But then you might want the accent diamonds channel set instead of prong set, which is no problem, we might even be able to adapt the existing design for this ring for less than it would cost to design an entire ring from scratch.

What is the best way to select diamond for a custom ring?

We will be happy to help you select the best diamonds from our inventory for your custom ring, or you can search the inventory of Brian Gavin Diamonds for a center stone that meets your selection criteria, and even used the matched diamonds search feature to find matching accent diamonds.

For smaller accent diamonds weighing less than 0.20 carats, which are referred to as melee (pronounced mel-lee) in the industry, Brian Gavin has special Signature Melee on hand which is VS-2 in clarity and F-G in color. We use this quality of accent diamond because it is a good middle ground in terms of clarity and color, and it looks really good with diamonds of all colors.
