Do Brian Gavin Blue diamonds have resale value?

Do Brian Gavin Blue diamonds have resale value?

I’m considering buying this 1.517 carat, G-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature diamond with medium blue fluorescence; but when I mentioned it to my local jeweler, he told me that fluorescent diamonds are discounted because the blue fluorescence makes them look cloudy, and that I would have difficulty selling the diamond, or getting somebody to take it in on trade, if I ever wanted to do so in the future. They had a comparable EGL Tolkowsky cut diamond that I liked, but when I went back to look at it again, the diamond had been sold, and another sales associate suggested a diamond with strong blue fluorescence, so now I’m confused & need advice.” - Samuel P.

The concept of “Burning the Stone”

There is a common phrase used throughout the diamond industry to describe the scenario that you provide in your inquiry, it’s called “burning the stone” and all it requires is for the jeweler to plant a seed or two of doubt into your brain, and allow the concept to take root, then harvest the bounty by suggesting an alternative diamond which does not exhibit any of the “negative traits” which they’ve identified about the diamond you are considering.

One of the most common ways that we’ve seen jewelers use when burning a Brian Gavin diamond is to suggest that diamonds with blue fluorescence are discounted because fluorescence is a negative trait, and yet, it seems that upon closer inspection of their inventory, our customers discover that the jewelers have quite a few diamonds with blue fluorescence in their inventory, so what’s really going on?

The jeweler is quite simply trying to convince you not to purchase the Brian Gavin diamond, based upon the presence of fluorescence, by presenting you with a “comparable diamond” from their inventory, which does not exhibit fluorescence; but is the diamond actually better than the option which you are considering from Brian Gavin?

Should you consult an independent Gemologist?

The fact of the matter is that it is in the jewelers interest to sell you a diamond from their inventory, there is no profit for them if you purchase a diamond from Brian Gavin; likewise, it is in our interest to sell you a diamond from our inventory, because there is no profit involved in our helping you purchase a diamond from another vendor; thus you should consult an independent Gemologist, or a diamond advisor who has nothing to gain or lose from the transaction, if you truly want an impartial opinion regarding the characteristics of the diamonds which you are considering.

Some questions that you might want to ask the Gemologist are:

  • Are EGL graded diamonds valued the same as GIA / AGS graded diamonds?
  • Are the clarity and color grades truly comparable?
  • Are the proportions of the diamonds truly comparable?
  • Is the degree of optical symmetry truly comparable?
  • Which diamond exhibits the best pattern through ASET?
  • Which diamond looks best through an Ideal Scope?
  • Which diamond looks best through a Hearts & Arrows scope?
  • Which diamond would they purchase, and why?

And while you’re at it, ask the independent Gemologist their thoughts on the effect of medium or strong blue fluorescence on a stone like the 1.517 carat, G-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature diamond, because I think you’ll discover than many of them will indicate that they love the effect of blue fluorescence upon a diamond, and that many Gemologists own diamonds with blue fluorescence; which might answer your question pertaining to resale value of a Brian Gavin diamond with blue fluorescence.

The reality is that all diamonds have resale value, the value of which is based upon the individual characteristics of the diamond, such as Cut quality, Carat weight, Color, and Clarity, but also the value of the brand name which is associated with the diamond; and the Brian Gavin Signature brand of diamonds is recognized worldwide as one of the finest brands of super ideal cut diamonds available, and we stand behind our brand by offering a generous trade-in and upgrade policy.
