Are halo settings easy to break?

I’m considering the purchase of a halo setting Danny, and I’m wondering whether halo settings are easy to break because my girlfriend happens to be extremely active and plays a lot of sports. A local jeweler told me that halo settings are easy to break and that I should consider something more durable like a channel setting for my girlfriend, the problem is that she really wants a ring like the Sarah Halo by Brian Gavin. What advice and recommendations do you have? We’re looking for diamonds in the range of 1.10 – 1.20 carats, and I certainly don’t want to buy her a setting which might not provide a secure environment for our investment. – Kent S.

How durable are halo settings?

Halo settings are no more easy to break than other settings, but what I believe you are asking is how easy is it to knock a diamond out of a halo setting, and that is another matter entirely. It takes a tremendous amount of pressure for a ring to break, but it is relatively easy to pull back or shear off a prong if you manage to strike the ring at just the right angle, with just the right amount of force, and this is probably what your local jeweler was referring to when he suggested that you might want to consider a different ring style that is better suited for your girlfriend’s active lifestyle.

One thing that I wished more people would realize is that jewelry is intended to be ornamental and decorative, the structure of a halo setting tends to incorporate prongs which are smaller in size and thus the rings can be prone to diamond loss if they are worn under the wrong circumstances, e.g. while playing sports, rock climbing, cleaning the house, doing laundry, doing yard work, etc.

Whenever I’m discussing this issue with a woman, they always seem to balk at the thought of having to take off their ring every time they throw a load of laundry in the wash, well take a moment to imagine how many times your ring is likely to bang up against the side of the wash tub, or possibly be caught while you pull things out of the dryer.

Halo style rings designed for a more active lifestyle:

The Brian Gavin Halo setting pictured above in 18k rose gold features a milgrain edge that provides some protection to the edge of the diamonds and the prong structure, making it more difficult to knock diamonds out of the setting. While the addition of the decorative trim does add some protection for the accent diamonds, it is still important to remove your jewelry when playing sports, doing housework, gardening, and so forth.

We offer a variation of this concept in the form of the Round Square Halo from Brian Gavin, which is designed to set a round brilliant cut diamond in a framework which is a slightly rounded square. As with most of the jewelry created by Brian Gavin, these designs are available in rose gold, white gold, yellow gold, and platinum. And if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for within our online catalog of engagement ring designs, we’ll be happy to discuss designing the custom engagement ring of your dreams! Regardless of what ring design you choose, be sure to add the ring to your homeowners or renters policy to ensure that it is insured against loss, theft, and accidental damage.
