Are Brian Gavin Diamonds conflict free?

Hi Danny, I’m in the process of shopping for a diamond engagement ring and my girlfriend has indicated that she wants a Canadian diamond because they are conflict free. I can’t seem to find any Canadian diamonds on the Brian Gavin web site, and I’m wondering how your diamonds compare to sites like which advertise that they sell diamonds that are of ethical origin, but which seem to be sourced from Russia, Botswana, Namibia and Canada… so I’m confused as to whether I really need to buy a Canadian diamond in order to ensure that it is not a blood diamond, please help me figure this out. Oh by the way, I’m looking for something in the range of 0.90 – 0.99 carats, G-H color, VS clarity, with a pattern of hearts and arrows, set in the fishtail pave with truth head. Thanks! – Glenn S.

Brian Gavin Diamonds are Conflict Free:

The simple answer to your dilemma Glenn is that Brian Gavin Diamonds strictly adheres to the requirements set forth by the Kimberley Diamond Act of 2003, and as such all of the diamonds which we offer have been sourced through ethical and legal channels…

While Canadian diamonds are gaining in popularity because they are advertised as being conflict free because they are produced from diamond rough that originates from Canada, there are still some underlying issues involving disputes between the Aborigine tribes of Canada and the various mining interests.

The diamond rough used to produce Brian Gavin Signature and Brian Gavin Blue diamonds is sourced through legitimate channels, under the provisions of the Kimberley Diamond Act of 2003. The origin of the diamond rough varies depending on supply and demand; but just like the other web site that you reference, the origin is usually Russia, Botswana, Namibia, or South Africa.

The interesting thing about their marketing approach is that it essentially plays upon the emotions of consumers by implying that diamonds offered by other legitimate companies, might not be of ethical origin when in fact it is almost impossible to operate a legitimate diamond venture outside of the confines of the Kimberley Diamond Act.

Yet every single piece of diamond rough which passes through our hands must be accompanied by a Kimberley Diamond Certificate of Origin, which is required at every stage of the import and export process, so it’s kind of ridiculous and brilliant all at the same time as far as their marketing campaign goes… but I’m sure it works because nobody wants to buy a blood diamond, but keep in mind that the term is a reference to diamonds mined illegally during the civil war in the Sierra Leone, which ended in 2002, so it’s quite unlikely that anything produced today would be cut from diamond rough produced during that time period.

Putting your diamond engagement ring together:

I’ve looked through our inventory and think that this 0.914 carat, G-color, VS-2 clarity, Brian Gavin Signature round with hearts and arrows will look great in the Fishtail Pavé setting with Truth Head from Brian Gavin. As with all Brian Gavin Signature diamonds, the proportions of the diamond are right in the middle of the range designated for the zero ideal cut rating from the American Gem Society Laboratory (AGSL) and the diamond has an overall cut grade of AGS Ideal-0 on the Light Performance grading platform, which is proof that the diamond will be incredibly bright and full of sparkle! And of course, it is cut from diamond rough that was sourced through legitimate channels…

When you purchase your ideal cut diamond from Brian Gavin, you not only get the peace of mind of knowing that you are buying a diamond that is as bright and vibrant as possible, you also get the peace of mind of knowing that the diamond you buy has been produced from diamond rough sourced from legitimate sources under the provisions set forth by the Kimberley Diamond Act of 2003. You don’t need to buy a diamond from Canada to ensure that it is conflict free…
